2  LITTLE LIGHTS URBAN MINISTRIES  SUMMER 2013 WELCOME TO HOPKINS We are excited to embark upon the largest expansion in the history of Little Lights. On July 2nd, Little Lights officially began offering children's programs at Hopkins public housing complex, which is a few blocks from our current locations in Potomac Gardens. Earlier this spring the Hopkins Residence Council asked Little Lights to move into the vacated community center space inside Hopkins. The DC Housing Authority is donating the almost 2,000 square feet of space, plus utilities, so Little Lights can provide children and family strengthing programs to the residents of Hopkins. Since the Boys and Girls Club left Hopkins over a year ago, there has been very little programming accessible to the youth of Hopkins. HOPKINS AT A GLANCE: + $7300: average annual income + 150 children ages 0-18 + 40%: graduation rate for DCPS in underserved areas + Closest Metro: Potomac Avenue + Driving on 295, you can see Hopkins between the Virginia Ave. exit and the John Phillip Sousa Bridge over the Anacostia River. Little Lights is eager to provide year-round programs 5 days per week at Hopkins, including tutoring and academic support, recreation and arts activities, and character education and Bible studies. We plan to provide parenting classes and job search support in the future. Getting the space in operating condition was quite a task, but we did it thanks to the help of so many churches and volunteer groups who put in countless hours cleaning, priming, painting, and decorating. Eight different churches and groups sent volunteers to help with the renovation, and four of those groups agreed to sponsor specific rooms. The Mommy and Kids Making a Difference group sponsored and designed the arts and crafts room, Vision of Peace Church sponsored our game room, Grace Community Church sponsored our computer lab, and CCPC sponsored the multi-purpose room.
