Little Lights Update Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with God. Volume 9, Issue 3 www.littlelights.org Potomac Gardens Day Emily Baldwin, Staff Summer 2009 First Lady of North Korea Visits Steve Park, Executive Director On June 15, 2009, Little Lights was very honored to have the First Lady of South Korea and other distinguished guests come and visit us at our Potomac Gardens units. It was an exciting time for both students and staff as we were able to share some of the things that we love to do here at Little Lights. Melvina Middleton and Steve Park at the Community Day On Saturday, June 13, the Potomac Gardens Resident Council and Little Lights hosted a community day and talent show at Potomac Gardens. It was a huge success! We were thrilled to have the opportunity for Potomac Gardens residents, Little Lights staff and volunteers, and other members of the neighborhood to come together and enjoy themselves. Ms. Melvina Middleton, president of the Resident Council, collaborated with Little Lights and other Residence Council members for the community day, bringing in everything from a moon bounce to snow cones, cotton candy, face painting, bingo, and a DJ. Many Little Lights volunteers provided hot dogs and hamburgers and spent several hours cooking for the many people in attendance. After a day full of fun, food, and dancing, the audience was treated to a fabulous talent show. Little Lights students, as well as other members of the Potomac Gardens community, shared their various gifts, including spoken word poetry, singing, drumming, drama, rapping, and more. It was a harmonious scene where diverse people came together to felchildren enjoying all the fun! lowship and enjoy each other's company. During the visit the First Lady enjoyed a song by the The First Lady of South Korea LLUM Gospel Choir, played at the Potomac Gardens Units a game of foosball with some of the boys, and talked with volunteers and Little Lights graduates Dwaine Brown and Ronada Hewitt. It was a great honor to have her as our guest and we were very blessed by her words of encouragement. She stated that, "I know that God is present here." The First Lady also donated a Flat-screen TV and Little Lights uniforms to support the cause. After her visit with us on Monday, she went on to meet with First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday! The Gospel Choir performs for the First Lady A big thank you to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and representatives from the mayor's office, as well as all the other students, volunteers, and staff who came out to welcome the First Lady. And of course thank you to First Lady Kim Yoon-Ok who took time out of her very busy schedule to come and see us.
