2 LITTLE LIGHTS URBAN MINISTRIES WINTER 2014 As we near the 20th Anniversary for Little Lights, it's hard not to get a little reflective. Starting inside of my parents' Tae Kwon Do studio as a volunteer-driven tutoring program, it has been amazing to see it grow year-by-year. With over 9 full-time, 40+ part-time, and more than 700 volunteers annu- ally, Little Lights has become quite an operation. We now offer a wide array of programs for adults and children as well as run a landscap- ing small business, The Clean Green Team, all focused on empowering youth and families with Christ's love at Potomac Gardens and Hopkins public housing. Yet, the heartbeat remains the same. It's about compassionate, caring relationships among staff, parents, children, volunteers, supporters, and friends of Little Lights. I truly believe in the power of compas- sion to change lives, bring hope to places deemed hopeless, and to transform communities. One young man, named Marcus, has helped to remind me of why Little Lights exists. Marcus may not be the most popular kid in school, nor one who gets the best grades, but he has a huge heart. He comes faithfully to many programs and always gives hugs and smiles to those around him. At the Gathering on Friday night, he volunteered to sing for parents and fellows students and helped to inspire all of us with his passion- ate voice. Later that night, he held hands with one of our staff members who had recently lost a sibling and prayed sincerely for her. On the following Monday, he came to Homework Club with an amazing attitude and then walked over to Boys Night to learn enthusiastically about God's love for him and about making wise decisions in life. He stayed late and gladly helped clean up and vacuum the program space with a cheerful spirit. Little Lights exists to show God's love to precious students like Marcus and to help empower him to be all that God created him to be. Thank you for your support and prayers for Little Lights and for kids like Marcus. It is truly appreciated.
